International Youth Day ’23

August 12, 2023

Leaving No One Behind
Climate change disproportionately affects underserved adolescent girls and young women worldwide, as they heavily rely on natural resources for sustenance. Often tasked with securing food, water, and fuel, they encounter heightened vulnerability due to climate-driven factors like droughts. Long journeys for resources expose them to elevated risks of sexual and gender-based violence, among other threats. Extreme weather conditions further worsen poverty, leading families to marry off their daughters early to ease economic strain or secure a bride price, aiming to enhance prospects. Addressing these challenges is essential for creating a safer and more equitable future.

To create a sustainable world where no one is left behind, inclusivity in climate action is crucial! The time has come to promote gender equality in climate change initiatives and amplify the voices of diverse young people. Fostering gender inclusivity in climate change efforts is pivotal to unlocking the complete potential of youth in cultivating a greener, more equitable, and sustainable world.

This International Youth Day, we enthusiastically celebrate the extraordinary potential and influence of young people as catalysts for positive change. This year’s theme, “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” underscores youth’s vital role in shaping a healthier, greener, and more sustainable future for all. As we confront escalating environmental challenges, the significance of green skills cannot be overstated. These skills empower young individuals to comprehend, tackle, and mitigate the impacts of climate change and other environmental issues. By equipping them with knowledge and expertise in sustainable practices, we can drive innovation, endorse eco-friendly solutions, and nurture an ethos of environmental consciousness.

In honour of International Youth Day, we are elated to introduce our #greenskills social media toolkit. Designed to equip young people with the essential knowledge, tools, and resources to share with the community as environmental advocates, this resource is available on our Trello board: https://trello.com/b/Ziq8WEzg/iyd-2023-pty-y-act-yph

Together, we possess the potential to drive substantial change and construct a world where green skills illuminate the path to a brighter tomorrow.

Happy International Youth Day!
