Empowering Senegal’s Youth for Inclusive Leadership and Sustainable Impact
Ci Laa Bokk stands as a pioneering initiative within Senegal, an integral part of the Power to You(th) program. This initiative is deeply rooted in fostering meaningful and inclusive youth participation (MIYP) in the realms of decision-making and leadership. Since its inception in 2021, Ci Laa Bokk has been actively facilitated in Senegal through a collaborative effort between the Power to You(th) consortium and fifteen civil society organizations (CSOs). What initially commenced at the grassroots community level has significantly expanded, now successfully operating at both regional and national levels. Notably, this isn’t just a venture involving regional authorities but has also garnered the involvement of key national ministries, such as the Ministry of Health, reflecting a broad-based engagement across sectors.
One of the striking features of this program is its emphasis on community-level implementation by CSOs, geared towards ensuring sustainability well into the future, rather than being confined to a short-term, finite existence of perhaps five years.
The dawn of 2022 marked a pivotal moment with the local elections witnessing an unprecedented influx of young Senegalese individuals being elected into office. In response to this, a significant gathering was arranged, a luncheon where these young mayors converged. This wasn’t just an assembly limited to elected officials but included a diverse cohort of young leaders, comprising entrepreneurs, and representatives from CSOs. The event became a melting pot where artists, influencers, and politicians shared their experiences, underwent collective training, and found a common resonance in the pressing need for unity and ongoing collaboration. It was during this meeting that a realization dawned upon the young politicians, transcending party lines, as they recognized the manipulative tactics employed by established leaders and the critical necessity for meaningful inclusive youth participation (MIYP) in decision-making processes.
Looking ahead, a detailed action plan is set to be executed, paving the way for Ci Laa Bokk to evolve into a robust West African youth platform. Solange Mbaye encapsulated this vision succinctly, stating, “If we aim to secure our place at the decision-making table, it’s imperative that we journey together. Our collective strength will determine the extent of our progress.”
