Légal Dow Nafi (22), from Matam, Senegal, went through a traumatic experience when she was forced into an early marriage, and sexual abuse. After years Nafi found the courage to escape this abusive relationship, and found help in a local women’s organization, who supported her through this difficult stage. She worked on her mental and emotional health, collaborating with counselors to overcome the traumas. Then Nafi decided to become actively involved in the fight against sexual abuse and early and forced marriage. She was trained then by Power to You(th) Senegal, and mentored to become a youth champion. Initially she created a small association in her neighborhood, she contributed to awareness campaigns and advocacy aimed at preventing such abuse within the community through a Whatsapp group. Nafi has now become a mentor and a source of inspiration for other young women in her community. Her courage and resilience have shown that it is possible to overcome traumatic experiences and create a better life. Through her active involvement, Nafi has helped to change attitudes in her community. She has helped to raise awareness of the consequences of early and forced marriages, as well as sexual abuse, and to promote healthier practices that respect women’s rights.
